RON DOP CUBA

The origin of Ron Ligero

β€œThe Cuban ron has a centuries-long tradition: everything dates back to 1862 when the extract from sugar cane was distilled for the first time.”

A new discovery

Although of very ancient origin, we are even talking about the first millennium, the credit for the development of Ron was attributed to Christopher Columbus, who in 1493, during his second voyage to the Americas, is said to have taken sugar cane cuttings in the Canary Islands and transplanted them in the Caribbean.

The Ron Ligero

But the first documented distillation of Ron dates back to the 17th century in the Caribbean. At that time, slaves realized that a distillate could be produced from the fermentation of molasses. This distillate was consumed without aging and probably at full strength.

Today, Cuban ron is known as a light and precious distillate, filtered and clarified, with a soft and never overpowering taste.

of history

From the origins to today

XV

1492

Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba on October 28, 1492 and called the island β€œthe most beautiful land that human eyes have ever seen.”

The production of sugar strengthened the Cuban industry, making the country the first supplier of this product for the entire West and also becoming vital for the island’s industry.

During these years, molasses, a product derived from sugar manufacturing, grew and so did the production of aguardiente in Cuba.

XIX

1850

The production of sugar and ron went hand in hand, but Spain initially refused to grant its colonies permission to distill. It was precisely during this period that a real ron industry was born and prospered in Cuba, just when it was struggling for its independence.

1862

The Maestros Roneros of Santiago de Cuba were able to give this aguardiente de caΓ±a a smoother and delicate taste, using a column distillation system and second-use white oak barrels to age the distillate.

1870

The Cuban ron distillery El Infierno, producer of the Ron Cubay brand, is founded.

1878

La Vizcaya Cuban Ron Distillery is founded, producer of the SaoCan brand.

Sugarcane began to develop more and more: thanks to the microclimates, each region allows the development of varied types of sugarcane. At the end of the 19th century, there were already 107 different varieties.
This is how Cuba became the supplier of one third of the world’s sugar.

1884

The Cuban Ron distillery San Lino is founded, producer of the Ron Cubay brand.

1890

Alla fine del XIX secolo, grazie alle nuove tecnologie, i produttori di ron cubano iniziarono per primi a utilizzare la distillazione a colonna. Thanks to this revolution, the Ron Ligero was born: a new type of ron, with exceptional raw materials, lighter, fresh, and characteristic of Cuba.
